This Year's Model Updates:

Lexus has introduced a completely redesigned ES 300 for 2002. The new car is roomier and quieter than the previous car, and in many ways has become more closely aligned with the LS 430 flagship model. Safety and feature quotients have been increased, and the car is wrapped in a svelte new body.

Pros:
  • Nice array of luxury and convenience features, strong and silent V6, advanced safety technology.
Cons:
  • Many of the desired features are optional and expensive.

  • Noisy start and rattles - 2002 Lexus ES 300

Not many people can say they ve owned 2 2003 ES300s.. I bought one in Oct/2002 a 2003 model.. Brought it back to the dealer 3 times for an engine noise on starting the car.. They attempted to fix it numerous times and I finally said. I don t want it.. Enough is enough.. Well I traded it in last week for another one with Nav system and ML stereo pkg which I m very happy to have done the second time around.. The car itself is nice to drive, luxurious and quiet well except for a rattle in the front dash or upper window.. Still needs to be determined where.. The Nav system screen is also loose..

  • The Lexus Myth - 2002 Lexus ES 300

The impulse acquisition of this Lexus from a good TV ad on the GPS (the Lexus came with it) was a poor decision on my part. I stepped down from Mecedes Benz and/ Seville quality. My "Lexus owning business associates" encouraged me to switch brands. "There dependable and never in the shop!" In the first year they replaced the front brake rotors two times. I kept remarking about the engine/transmission match up and the "hesitation on acceleration/pausing, but was assured that I had a great imagination. It was recalled by a Lexus letter at a later date. The backs of the leather front seats would depart when the electric seat adjustment were initiated.I am happy back in a Mercedes Benz.

  • I liked my 1998 Lexus better - 2002 Lexus ES 300

This is my 2nd ES300. I traded in a 1998 model for this car. Power and gas milaege are less than last vehicle. Brakes on car were poor and unsafe. When dealer serviced car he informed us there was a defect. Vehicle was not recalled. Brakes were dangerous, customers are not notified. You find out when you complain about the brakes. I will never buy another Lexus.

  • Rear Door Rattles - 2002 Lexus ES 300

This is a powerful vehicle but is not at all quick off the starting line. The adaptive variable suspension works well and responds to the drivers mood. The ride quality is truly "creamy". Braking distances are very competitive. If you can afford the Mark Levinson sound system, you wont regret it.

  • Great car but beware... - 2002 Lexus ES 300

This is our second Lexus. Love the exterior design and interior design as well. Really sharp car. Has all the bells and whistles anyone could need. Somewhat sluggish though on pickup. There is definitely a computer problem with the transmission. Seems to have trouble - at times - deciding what gear it needs to be in. Lexus is aware of problem with the 2002 ES300, but has not been able to come up with a solution as yet.

  • Nice car but.. - 2002 Lexus ES 300

Well it has a nice ride & is quiet. Nice features. It is a little under powered, but I expected that. Many have complained about instability of the transmission - but it is my understanding that the ES300 has fly-by- wire control, & have experienced "shuttering" to different degrees - from the feeling that your on a bumpy road, to a low frequeny shutter after coming down a hill & getting ready to go up another. This is a classic unstable servo system - something that the engineers should have solved long ago. BTW, the transmission isnt all that great either. Should be a lot better for a 35k car made by Toyota.

  • Excellent Quality with the Price Tag - 2002 Lexus ES 300

One big problem: I left the car in the garage for my summer vacation for one month. It went totally dead. Dearler said it was not uncommon because of all the on-board computer features. Why put so many features if the battery cannot support it? Service consultants said I should have mentioned that I was a frequent traveller before making the buying decision. So you have to be able to afford to buy expensive car but no allowed to travel? The salesperson never told me that, and Mercedes and Porches did not give me this condition. 2nd question: noise started to appear after a year.

  • Never was a Lexus fan but - 2002 Lexus ES 300

I have always steered clear of Lexus thinking it was more hype then anything. But I bought a 2002 ES 300 with 90k on it. In 6 months I have already taken it over 100k with trips to Dallas from Houston and also Houston to Chicago. It has performed really good. I have a couple issues the cup holders broke, the interior trunk/gas release doesnt work and the cd player jams occasionally but considering the car is 8 years old and has over 100k miles I cant really complain. Its quiet. Rides smooth and has averaged 23 mpg pretty much since I got it. Avg almost 30 mpg on the road. All in all a very nice vehicle that seems like it last quite a while. My previous ride was an 07 m35.

  • disappointed - 2002 Lexus ES 300

Too many problems for a luxury car: computer failure on braking system, jerky transmission, and inferior tires. Had to replace Toyo tires at 20,000 miles due to very loud road noise. The cost of replacement was partially covered by warranty. Poor radio reception without external antenna. Poor gas mileage for a car with no "Get up & go" performance.

  • Everything good but transmission - 2002 Lexus ES 300
    By -

I love everything except the slow- respond, not-smooth transmission. This is not what I expect from a Lexus. Sometimes its getting so annoying that I hate my car. Other than that, everything else is soooooooo nice.
